The Universities (Amendment) Act 2016, which was signed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in December, requires that a council should consist of 9 members five of them appointed competitively by the CS, according to Section 36 of the Act. Other members are PSs (Education and Treasury), a chairperson and the vice chancellor as an ex-officio member.
The heads of other university Councils include Dr Jane Nyakang’o for Dedan Kimathi University, Dr Timothy Mwangi Kiruhi for UoN, Dr. Ben Chumo, former Managing Director of Kenya Power for Egerton University council in Njoro. Prof Migot Adholla who previously served as agriculture and rural development permanent secretary will head Kenyatta University council. Dr Jeremiah Ntoloi Koshal (Moi), Halima Saado Abdillahi for TUK, Dr David Ojakaa (University of Eldoret), Dr Jeremy Bundi (Masinde Muliro).
Dr Dulacha Galgalo (Meru University of Science and Technology). Dr Galgalo served in the Central Bank Supervision and Banking Services departments from 1996.
In January 2017, Commission for university Education conducted an audit of both public and private institutions of higher learning. This aimed at interrogating the manner in which the higher learning institutions admit students, examine them and award degree certificates. This was necessitated after various sectors of the industry complained about the quality of graduates undertaking courses like engineering, medicine, pharmacy and law among others.
