Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is defined as “the systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout one’s working life”. For practicing engineers, CPD is necessary in order to address professional obsolescence. The programme is intended to enable engineers to keep abreast with changes in their areas of practice and thus be up to date with the current practices and therefore remain competitive.
As per the Engineers Act 2011 one of the functions of the Board is to “plan, arrange, coordinate and oversee continuing professional training and development and facilitate internship of graduate engineers”. The objectives of the CPD Programme are: -
Improve professional competence of local engineers and engineering firms.
Keep abreast of changing procedures and standards.
Understand and apply advances in technology.
Better serve the engineering profession, community and environment.
Assist practicing engineers to increase capacity for learning so as to be more capable, confident and adaptable when faced with change.
Broaden into related fields, such as those covering management, financial or legal aspects in order to improve work performance and enhance career prospects.
Maintain, improve or expand technical skills and knowledge.
