The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) in partnership with the National Construction Authority (NCA) organized the first monthly luncheon in this FY 2014/15 at the Pan Afrique Hotel on Wednesday, 30thJuly 2014 starting at 12.30 pm.
The chief guest at the event was Jane Njoroge the deputy director general of Public Procurement Oversight Authority (PPOA). The theme of the luncheon was; ‘how engineers can assist the NCA to enforce its regulations’.
The IEK chairman Eng. Kosgei, who also chairs the PPOA capacity building committee, welcomed all the members in attendance and introduced the new council members and the guests. He also acknowledged the support of NCA and their role in the country.
Representing NCA at the function, Eng. Maurice Aketch said that anything that changes the landscape is within the mandate of NCA. He said that the NCA had registered about 13000 contractors of which 80% are medium and small, that is category 5-8. He urged IEK and engineers to be more aggressive within the body and assist with conformance to regulations and investigations in case of arising collapse of structures.
The chief guest said that the procurement process would be much more effective if engineers took part in it. She asked IEK to ensure that its members do a proper job wherever their station is to avoid disrepute creeping in the profession.
The chief guest added that the PPOA is ready to work with engineers and will soon have a capacity building program with partnership with IEK once the funds are available.
Eng. Collins Juma the Chairperson Functions and Conference Committee promised that during his tenure IEK will have these luncheons on a monthly basis as it should be.
