Every single day, Vestas wind turbines deliver clean energy that supports the global fight against climate change. Wind power from Vestas’ 55,000 wind turbines currently reduces carbon emissions by over 60 million tons of carbon dioxide every year, while at the same time building energy security and independence.

Vestas has delivered wind energy in 74 countries, providing jobs for around 18,800 passionate people at our service and project sites, research facilities, factories and offices all over the world. With 52 percent more megawatts installed than anyone else in the industry and 70 GW of cumulative installed capacity worldwide, Vestas is the world leader in wind energy.

Vestas installed the first wind park in Kenya (Ngong Hill Wind Farm) and is currently installing the largest wind park in Africa, Lake Turkana wind park. Vestas has a local office in the Karen area of Nairobi and has installed turbines across Africa including Cape Verde, Egypt, Morocco and South Africa.

The order by Lake Turkana Wind park is the largest in Vestas’ history in terms of number of wind turbines in a single project. Lake Turkana Wind Power is solely responsible for the financing, construction and operation of the wind park. Vestas will deliver and install the turbines while providing the maintenance of the plant under a 15-year service and availability contract with Lake Turkana Wind Power. The Lake Turkana wind park will produce the equivalent of around 15 percent of Kenya’s generation capacity as of today. Lake Turkana wind park will also contribute to filling the energy gap in the country, enhancing energy diversification and saving 16 million tons of CO2 emission compared to a fossil fuel fired power plant.

Lake Turkana wind park will be one of the world’s most efficient wind farms and with average wind speeds in excess of 11 m/s, the Lake Turkana project will add 310 MW of clean, reliable electricity capacity to the Kenyan national grid. The project will generate more than 1,400 GWh of power per year, equivalent to approximately 15 percent of the country’s current electricity consumption.

We have also installed turbines in Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Cape Verde and are currently also very active in South Africa. According to the Global Wind Energy Council, Africa is expected to install more than 1GW of wind energy in 2015, with the growth being driven primarily by South Africa, Egypt and Morocco. In 2014, Vestas installed 158 MW in South Africa and was chosen as the supplier for the 310 MW Lake Turkana Wind Project in Kenya, so Vestas already has a solid presence in Africa and expects to continue its engagement.
