Mpesa foundation academy is on course to finishing Phase two of its development in August this year. The Academy is a state-of-the-art, mixed boarding high school which seeks to provide a first-class education to gifted but economically disadvantaged children from all counties in Kenya. The project has been designed and is supervised by Mangat, I.B. Patel and Partners (MIBP) as the consulting engineers and Planning Systems as the Architecture.

Phase one was partly undertaken by Lalji Meghji Patel as contractors from 2015 January and later completed by China Railway Jianchang Engineering (CRJE). Phase two of the project is being undertaken by CRJE and Samani contractors. Phase two includes the construction of extra dormitories and junior housing units.

The Academy seeks to introduce a new approach to education in Kenya and places great emphasis on the holistic development of all the learners not just in academics but also in technology, music, sports, the arts, outdoor pursuits and community service.

The model adopted is similar to that of Winnie Madikizela Mandela School that was set up in South Africa. The idea was spurred on by entrepreneurial leadership within Safaricom. Drawing on advanced technologies; the M-PESA Foundation Academy will innovatively deliver the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) curriculum in a world-class educational facility.

Facilities included in the development are; first class sports, arts, and cultural facilities, in addition to academic facilities. It will include an indoor sports hall, a sports field, running track, swimming pools, squash courts, a music centre and a 500 seat auditorium. The campus is set 75 acres of land.

The development is situated in Kiambu County along Mang’u-Thika Road. The Academy has had its initial intake of students and will ultimately have a capacity of 800 students by 2019. The education professionals in charge of the facility have vowed to not only have students excelling in KCSE examinations, but the M-PESA Foundation Academy will also redesign subjects taught so that they are delivered in diverse and excitable ways.

“Learners are exposed to the latest in technology with the use of iPads and our Learning Management System as part of the day-to-day teaching. The school focuses on molding future leaders and entrepreneurs by incorporating the core values of Curiosity, Leadership, Accountability, Innovation, Responsible Citizenship and Excellence (CLAIRE) into every sphere of learning within the Academy.” Says Les Baillie, CEO of the M-PESA Foundation Academy

The M-PESA Foundation is registered as a Charitable Trust; it invests in large-scale and long-term sustainable projects that have maximum impact on Kenyans in the areas of education, health, and environment.
