ICT Authority and Huawei Technologies today, October 13, 2016 sent off nine top students from different universities on a two- week fellowship and training programme in China. The programme dubbed ‘seeds for the future’ is now in its second year now and has managed to take 64 students to China who are beneficiaries. They will study and gain work experience as well as enable them gain exposure to the Chinese culture and cross cultural work experience in a globalized business environment.
The students selected from the Technical University of Kenya, Kabarak University, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, University of Nairobi, Strathmore University, Multimedia, Jomo Kenyatta and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, are presently pursuing Telecommunications and Information Technology courses at the respective institutions.
“Huawei is committed to see the development of the IT sector in the regions we operate in. We also expect to run the programme for another year with hope of training a total of 100 youth from the Kenyan universities, said Huawei CEO Mr. Dean Yu.
The participants will also have an opportunity to do a two-month internship at Huawei in Kenya after their graduation set for 21st October.
Acting ICT Authority CEO, Robert Mugo congratulated the students and wished them all the best in their academic training and tour. “I wish to challenge you to take advantage of this opportunity and use it to learn the various technologies that the Chinese embrace especially in technology and later come and apply them here in Kenya,” stated Mugo.
He also outlined some major objectives of the ICT Master plan 2014-2017. The mechanism aims at developing and sustaining high end talent by removing the gaps between industry requirements and the capabilities of the local workforce. It also goes on to develop critical high end skills and develop an ICT ready workforce to be able to meet the needs of the industry.
During the event, PS ICT, Victor Kyalo remarked that this is programmes will offer a good training ground for what has been learned in class to apply it practically in the industry. He also urged them to be inquisitive during the tour and build skills by engaging not only projects that they are given but also come up with their own projects and in turn create employment.
He also explained that the role of engineers or professionals in the ICT related disciplines is to ensure that each project is delivered efficiently and well.
