Samsung opens a training centre in Nairobi

Samsung becomes the third international company to open up a training centre here in the country after LG Electronics and China Huawei. The academy is the second by Samsung in Africa after the first one which was opened in South Africa.

The Samsung Electronics Engineering Academy was opened in Woodvale Centre in Westlands, Nairobi earlier this month with the aim of addressing the critical technical and engineering skills shortage in Africa. In a statement, the academy is meant to get African youth into the electronics job market. After training, the company will offer them internship opportunities and thereafter work as independent service technicians or employ them at their retail shops. The company seeks to develop 10,000 electronic engineers across the continent by the year 2015.

Samsung which last year became the 3rd world’s largest seller of Smartphones is also the largest maker of flat panels, memory chips and flat screen televisions. It seeks to speed up the race to get to larger share of the telecoms infrastructure and gadget market.
