Kenya Ports Authority is set to move the Kipevu oil terminal to a new site to create space for more large tankers.

The country’s largest petroleum relocation will cost $120million and the preliminary design will cost $1.7 million as agreed by all stakeholders.

“The current oil terminal at Kipevu and Shimanzi allows only one tanker to disembark at a time,” said Gichiri Ndua, KPA Managing Director.

“The new terminal will accommodate four tankers weighing 150,000 tonnes berthing at the same time to pave way for the construction of two additional berths of 350meter long,” he added.

Kipevu oil terminal is located on the mainland of Port Reitz which allows crude oil tankers of up to 100,000 tonnes whereas Shimanzi terminal accommodates vessels of up to 30,000tonnes.

The relocation will aim at improving port capacity and efficiency.
