We are willing to Purchase local power,says Kenya Power

Kenya Power has agreed to purchase power from any energy producers in the country so as to curb the power shortages that threaten the country. This follows the request by some Mount Kenya communities engaged in hydro-power generation on the possibility of Kenya Power to purchase the surplus power to add to the national grid.

“It is possible. The country has power problems and so anyone willing to sell us their power is welcome. All they need is to follow the procedure” said Mr. Odede, Energy Purchase department at Kenya Power.

The hydro power community projects located at Tharaka, Nithi, Meru and Kirinyaga counties were started through assistance of Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation compact.

The compact coordinator, Mr. Fred Kihara stated that Rwambati-Muchungwa self help project in Gichugu, Mitunguru Hydropower Project in Chongoria and Kaanwa community project are able to produce more power than the members can consume. He said that Rwambiti-Muchungwa could produce 132 kilowatts which was enough for members and surplus could be offered for the national grid.

The projects however regret vandalism of power equipments leading to huge losses.”This kills the morale of members who have invested millions of shillings in the projects”, said Mr.Kihara.The group however is seeking to upgrade their power production and increase water volumes.

Speaking to Kenya Engineer, Mr. Odede pointed that the country does not have enough power and so it’s even thinking of nuclear energy. He then urged that those willing to sell power to do so and follow the right procedure.
