Work on a railway line linking Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)  and Nairobi’s central business district has started  as the government moves to ease congestion on roads. “The contractor is on site and the project should be completed in eight months .” said Transport  PS Cyrus Njiru. The Shs800 million project is part of a larger Shs14 billion programme funded by Infraco, an infrastructure development company.

Among other things the programme seeks to rebuild more than 160 kilometres of rail network across the city,.  Shareholders of Infraco include  the World Bank, Sweden, UK,  Switzerland the Netherlands, Ireland and Austria.  The project will be the first rail track to be laid in the country in the last 100 years.

Dr Njiru said the government was also constructing a car park  at the JKIA Junction , off Mombasa Road   to decongest the CBD .This comes after the City Council of Nairobi  more than doubled parking fees  to reduce vehicle traffic in the CBD.

The PS said that other commuter lines will be laid to connect Kibera, Ruiru and Rongai  with the city before expanding the project to satellite towns like Thika  and Ruiru. He added that the integrated transport policy  that will address most of the transport challenges had been passed by the cabinet and is now awaiting parliamentary approval.
