Security is a major factor for the success of any undertaking in a country. With the new berth No. 19 being officially commissioned today, there’s expected increased activity at the port. Kenya Ports Authority, in charge of the port, is not without knowledge on the importance of security in such an undertaking.
The port has adopted an Integrated Security System (ISS) which is currently in its final touches of implementation. Jointly funded by the Government of Kenya and the Word Bank to a tune of $21.4 million,ISS will see the automation of security in line with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code requirements.
This according to KPA will be a double-edged advantage for the port as the system will be used to monitor cargo coming in and exiting through the port gates.
The system includes Optical Character Recognition and License Plate Recognition systems for identifying containers and trucks simultaneously for documentation purposes. Surveillance cameras will also be installed in strategic locations around the port and will operate 24hours a week.
The fixed cameras will focus on various areas of interest including Pan Tilt and Zoom cameras (PTZ) for surveillance. The long range thermal cameras at the water side will bring all aspects of illegal activities and pilferage nabbed on camera.
