The Migori county government is seeking to redouble its power production from Gogo falls within the county. Migori Deputy Governor, Nelson Mahanga Mwita, speaking during the unveiling of a soya milk processing plant in Kisumu County on Sunday, urged the Japanese government to consider stepping up the capacity of the hydro-electric power plant, which is economically feasible to boost growth in the county.
“The power supply in the county is becoming very unreliable and this makes many investors shy away; It also affects economic development,’’ said Mr. Mwita
Mr. Mwita said the additional power would boost investments and urged KenGen to hand the plant back to the community to enhance electricity generation.
Commissioned in 1957 by the colonialists, Gogo Power plant is situated in Rongo District, Kanyamkago West Location, Kajulu II Sub-location. The station was to supply power to the South Nyanza Mine at Macalder Mine from which the East African Power & Lighting, which later became Kenya Power & Lighting Company and KenGen took over after it was formed in 1997. The plant has the capacity to produce 60 Megawatts of which Mr. Mwita says the county only needs 50 percent.
“The plant has the capacity of producing up to 60 megawatts but the county only requires 30 megawatts, which will boost the current production for household use and other economic activities,’’ Mr. Mwita said.
