Green Nairobi Company waste-to-energy

Nairobi is preparing for a major transformation in how it handles waste, with the upcoming launch of Green Nairobi Company Limited — a fully county-owned entity that aims to convert the city’s garbage crisis into an energy opportunity.

Beyond just collection and disposal, the new company will put strong focus on waste-to-energy solutions, positioning Nairobi to tap into the growing global trend of generating renewable energy from solid waste. With the capital producing thousands of tonnes of waste daily, the potential to harness this resource for power generation and reduce reliance on landfills is immense.

Modelled on the Nairobi Water Company, Green Nairobi Company Limited will be structured as an autonomous entity with financial independence, run by a professional board and a Chief Executive Officer. Its establishment is part of Governor Sakaja Johnson’s long-term waste management strategy, developed from comprehensive studies and aligned with international best practices. Cities such as Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, and Cape Town have demonstrated how specialized agencies can lead effective solid waste management and energy recovery.

In readiness for operations, the company will absorb the existing Green Army workforce, ensuring continuity and efficiency in city cleaning services. The County has also invested in 24 tippers and 27 garbage compactors, strengthening the logistical backbone needed for waste collection. By combining manpower, machinery, and modern waste-to-energy technologies, the company seeks to transform Nairobi’s waste stream into a sustainable source of clean energy.

For engineers, urban planners, and environmentalists, the establishment of Green Nairobi Company Limited signals a new era where waste is not just a burden but a resource to power Nairobi’s future.
