Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited has energized the 400kV Isinya–Konza Transmission Line and the 400/132/66kV Konza Substation, marking a major step in strengthening Kenya’s national transmission network and securing reliable power supply for Konza Technopolis.

The project is expected to enhance power reliability in the lower eastern region while providing the transmission capacity required to support industrial, commercial and residential growth around Konza, Kenya’s flagship smart city.

The new infrastructure comprises a 98-kilometre double-circuit 400kV transmission line linking Isinya and Konza, together with a modern 400/132/66kV substation. The substation is equipped with two 400/132kV, 350MVA transformers and two 132/66kV, 100MVA transformers.

According to KETRACO, the line and substation will improve power transfer capability, strengthen network stability and give the national grid greater operational flexibility. This is particularly important as Kenya continues to expand its electricity demand base through urban growth, industrialisation and technology-driven developments.

Speaking during the announcement, KETRACO Acting Managing Director Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias said the energization of the Isinya–Konza line represents another key milestone in the country’s effort to build a more resilient transmission system.

“The successful energization of the Isinya–Konza Transmission Line and Konza Substation strengthens the reliability of the national grid and guarantees quality power supply to Konza Technopolis and surrounding areas,” Eng. Kibias said.

He added that the project is critical in supporting industrialisation, attracting investment and advancing Kenya’s Vision 2030 development agenda.

Beyond serving Konza Technopolis, the project will support the evacuation and distribution of electricity to the lower eastern region. It also improves grid resilience by creating enhanced interconnectivity and alternative power supply paths, reducing vulnerability to supply interruptions.

KETRACO said it remains committed to developing and maintaining a robust transmission system that supports economic growth, regional integration and universal access to reliable electricity.

The energization of the Isinya–Konza line comes at a time when Kenya’s electricity infrastructure is being called upon to support emerging industrial corridors, special economic zones, data-driven investments and expanding urban centres. For Konza Technopolis, dependable high-voltage transmission capacity is a critical enabler for attracting investors and sustaining the long-term growth of the smart city.
