Development Road Project

The Development Road Project is a massive infrastructure initiative designed to create a trade corridor that connects the southern Iraqi port of Al Faw with Turkey, and ultimately extends into Europe. The project aims to reduce transport times and costs for goods moving between Asia and Europe, providing a quicker alternative to the Suez Canal.

Project is expected to lead to 10-15% increase of global trade by providing a faster and cheaper alternative to the Suez Canal​! 

2025 marks a pivotal year for driving Iraq’s transformative growth and development!

Development Road Project in Numbers

INVESTMENT
The project is expected to:

  • Cost 25 billion USD
  • Cost 10 billion USD for the total Railway infrastructure
  • Get 5 Billion USD investment from Türkiye, UAE and Qatar each.
  • Have a 80% Foreign Investment Share especially from Gulf nations​
  • Have a 10 Billion USD Phase 1 Budget ​

OIL & GAS
The project is expected to:

  • Build an Oil Pipeline Capacity of 1 million barrels per day
  • Have a Pipeline Length of 1,000 kilometers, supporting Iraq’s energy exports​
  • Support 2 million barrels of Iraq oil exports per day through Iraq’s pipeline network, integrated with the Development Road​

LOGISTICS
The project is expected to:

  • Have a trade corridor length, from Basra to Türkiye, covering over 1,500 kilometers of road and rail infrastructure​
  • Connect Basra to London, forming a continuous trade route between the Middle East and Europe​
  • Reduce shipping time by 10 days between Asia and Europe (compared to the Suez Canal route)
  • Reduce Shipping Costs between Asia and Europe by 20-30%

MARITIME
The project is expected to:

  • Increase the capacity of The Grand Al Faw Port up to 20,000 TEUs, making it one of the largest ports in the Middle East​
  • Generate $1 billion annually in port fees alone from the Grand Al Faw Port

RAILWAY
The project is expected to:

  • Have a Railway Passenger Capacity of 16 million annually
  • Increase Freight Train Load to 10,000 tons of cargo daily

HIGHWAY
The project is expected to:

  • Handle 3 million vehicles annually once operational
