Jamii Telecom Limited (JTL), a  broadband provider in Kenya has completed its nationwide upgrade of its fibre optic network. The upgrade which kicked off early this year saw the company spend up to Sh261 million.

The four months upgrade has seen JTL’s existing Ethernet network upgraded to the Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) standard, which gives the company more security than its rivals. This has thus earned JTL a competitive edge over its rivals.

The service migration is seamless, and thus the firm’s clients will not pay to get migrated. However, customers requiring value added services such as voice from video, data and other services will pay for them.

“The upgrade has covered Nairobi, Mombasa, Naivasha, Nakuru, Eldoret, Kisumu, Kitale, Bugoma, Busia, Kakamega, Thika, Kisii and Kericho”,said JTL’s chairman, Joshua Chepkwony. They also intend to cover Nyeri, Embu, Meru and Nanyuki by end Q3.

JTL provides its services to banks, government and learning institutions among others. The upgrade comes at a time when the company is targeting government tenders -to connect learning institutions, health facilities and the administrative offices in the devolved government.

Other than the upgrade of the network, JTL has also embarked on a direct fibre optic connection project to homes under its brand, Jtl-faiba. Unlike other Internet connectivity platforms, Jtl faiba runs on a passive optical network thus is not vulnerable to power outages.

The firm intends to connect the businesses with branches across the country using its inter-city fibre network and also link the central government with its county offices.

The equipment used for the upgrade of JTL network was supplied by ECI Telecoms from Israel.
