In order to expand its regional growth, National Cement Company is set to construct a 15MW coal-fired power plant in Kajiado. The plant set to cost KES 1. 7 billion will generate its own limestone mining and clinker manufacturing in Kajiado.
The company will transport clinker to its factory on Mombasa Road where it produces the Simba cement product. The main objective of the plant is to save energy costs with the new plant in Kajiado.
Previously, the company imported coal from countries like South Africa but with Kenya’s initiative to mine coal, it will source the commodity locally. The annual coal consumption for the planned power plant is about 63,360 tonnes.
Coal power prices have dropped to 18% since the beginning of the year and this attributes it to being a cheaper source of energy that Kenya is exploring.
