Spectre International plans to be Kenya’s first fertilizer producer after it announced plans to venture into local production of a range of top dressing products. The Company whose main product was Extra Neutral Spirit, Neutral Spirits, Industrial Methylated Spirits and Colored Methylated Spirits produced from molasses to be used in the beverage, pharmaceutical and personal care industries, said it seeks to diversify due to reduced availability of molasses.
“We have a capacity to produce 40 tonnes of fertilizer daily if we operate at optimal level”, said Spectre’s Managing Director, Peter Brown. “All we need is to invest in the dryers and packaging material and we will be set.”
The fertilizer is set to be manufactured from the solid residues that remain after the fermentation process. In fact, the corporation has already sent samples to the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) for quality testing and was already conducting field tests. With ambiguity about the date, Mr. Brown said the product will be launched soon into the Kenyan market.
Statistics from the Economic Survey show that Kenya imported chemical fertilizers worth Sh20.2 billion in 2012. Last year, the Government expressed interest in establishing a Sh35 billion Local Fertilizer Plant set to serve East Africa. With this development, local production will cushion farmers from high cost of imported fertilizers.
