Fibre optic cable to Link Kenya and Tanzania

Barely a month after completing upgrade works on its network system, Jamii Telecom could connect Kenya to Tanzania through an inland optic fibre cable as it eyes contracts to deliver Internet traffic to corporate bodies in Tanzania.

The Sh130 million investment will be the second inland cable connecting Kenya to other countries after rival Kenya Data Networks (KDN) cable which connects Kenya to Uganda and Rwanda. Kenya and Tanzania are both linked to Seacom and Eassy undersea cables through the ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam.

The 137KM cable is expected to run from Namanga and provide the missing link between the two countries making it the first inland cable connecting the two countries. It will provide an alternative route for firms with branches that are connected to the undersea cable which has of late been subject to cuts interrupting internet provision.

In Kenya, the firm intends to connect the learning institutions, health facilities and the administrative offices as well as businesses with branches across the country using its inter-city fibre network.
