Today marked the first day for the International Engineer’s Conference that is held once every year. The theme under discussion of this year’s conference is: Role of Engineering Practitioners in the implementation of the Constitution.
This comes in at a time when the country is seeking to diversify infrastructural developments in the newly formed counties. Speaking during the conference, the Minister of Roads Franklin Bett showed appreciation to the engineers for their deliberations in considering the issue of infrastructure connectivity to the 47 counties as they will be involved in planning and implementation of various projects.
The shortage of qualified engineers in the country was acknowledged by various speakers.Currently, the ratio of engineers to the population stands at about 1:6450 against the recommended ratio of one engineer serving 2000 people. Among those attributed to this were a low output of engineers from the higher learning institutions which produce about 700 graduates per year.
The operationalization of the counties is expected to lead to substantial increase in the demand of engineers and thus an urgent need to develop the country’s engineering capacity as well as increase the training capacity for the upcoming engineers.
