When former US President George W Bush visited Tanzania in February 2008 he signed with Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete a $ million 698 five year grant Agreement to stimulate economic growth through targeted investments in the transportation, water and energy sectors.
The grant was channeled through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) an innovative and Independent US foreign aid agency that is helping to lead the fight against global poverty. MCC forms partnerships with some of the world’s poorest countries but only those committed to good governance, economic freedom and investments in their citizens.
Two years were spent in preparing a list of projects and on preliminary design and earlier last year a number of contracts were awarded. These included four road projects being constructed to bitumen standard and totaling 250 kilometres.
Two of the contracts were awarded to Chinese contactors, one to a Danish firm and the fourth to a French firm.
Other components of the program include
• Improved water supplies for Dar es Salaam and Morogoro
• Upgraded hydro schemes
• Airfield reconstruction at Mafia
• Submarine cable interconnector at Zanzibar and Pemba
• Power supplies to a number of towns and communities
• Implementing a Gender Equality Programme in a number of districts.
All these projects are scheduled to be completed by February 2013.
