KenGen’s Ngong Phase 1 Wind Farm was officially launched by Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi on September 8, 2010. The 5.1 MW facility is part of the power firm’s move to diversify the sources of electricity and marks a big step towards diversifying its sources of electricity.
KenGen plans to increase the wind energy capacity in Ngong Hills to 25.5 MW by the end of 2012. Sourcing of contractors for two separate turnkey contracts of 6.8 MW and 13.6 MW is currently underway. The 6.8 MW will be implemented using proceeds of a concessional loan to be extended to the Kenya Government by the Kingdom of Belgium while the 13.6 MW will be funded by a loan of Euro 20 million to the Government of Kenya by the Kingdom of Spain. Construction is expected to commence in January next year.
KenGen has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with HYDROCHINA International to carry out a feasibility study for the development of another wind farm on the southern part of the hill, where they expect to get approximately 50 MW in the next three years.
