In a move to ease traffic jam in the capital Nairobi, the government of Kenya has set up a command center. The center that has been funded by the Chinese government will control Nairobi traffic by use of lights with countdown timers to reduce the number of traffic police officers across the city.

This will positively impact traffic management in Nairobi as traffic offenders will be arrested easily especially the overlapping drivers who cause accidents in the city.

The 5 million U.S dollar integrated camera and traffic lights system is the first step in Nairobi so as to bring sanity and address a number of crimes.

This project follows a 98 million U.S dollar grant from the Chinese government which was provided in May 2012 for installation of CCTV in major cities and towns around the country following terrorist attacks that have hit the country severally.

According to police, 10% of all road accidents arise from cyclists and motorbike users. A research carried out by Ipsos Synovate shows that most accidents in East African nation occur because road users have little regards for traffic rules.

The command center has 80 screens and a number of telephone lines, which the officers manning it will be using to coordinate operations in the city.

Already 51 cameras have been installed within the city enabling live video streaming and recording for future necessities. The cameras will also capture speeding vehicles through number plate recognition and other criminal activities at selected areas. The surveillance system which will have smart cameras will operate on a 24/7 basis.
