Kenya will invest Ksh6.38 billion in the proposed oil refinery in Western Uganda. The public-private partnership will acquire 40% and 60% share ownership in East Africa and the private sector respectively.
Ugandan government has invited Kenya to buy small shares from the refinery as the three percent share will have no effect on the proposed projects. The project will be under the Lappset project that is see off two refineries at Lamu port and Isiolo.
Uganda refinery will hold a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day and the number is expected to go up before 2020.The first phase of the oil distribution will be at Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi and the second phase Eastern Africa.
The project will greatly increase the economic gains as it will create temporary jobs for approximately 4000 to 6000 people after Uganda acquired 29 square kilometers of land for the refinery.
Uganda chose UK investment energy firm, Taylor Dejongh after it had shortlisted six firms to build the oil refinery in December 2013.
