The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has said that the construction of the Sh26 billion second container terminal at the Port of Mombasa is 60 per cent complete. KPA managing director Gichiri Ndua said phase one of the new terminal is expected to be ready by March 2016.
“I am happy to share that construction of phase 1 of the new container is 60 percent complete. We are pleased with the progress. Once complete, the terminal will add a capacity of 15 million tons to the port,” added Mr. Ndua.
Speaking during the second annual KPA-media regional conference on Tuesday at Flamingo Hotel in Mombasa town, he said that the new project would complement the recently launched berth 19 and the general growing volume of cargo arriving at the port.
“The new terminal will handle 1.2 million 20-feet equivalent units, bringing the total capacity of the port of Mombasa to an estimated 2.1 million 20-feet units,” said Mr. Ndua.
He said the terminal west of Kipevu Oil Terminal is being constructed on 100 hectares of reclaimed land and will have three berths measuring 230, 320 and 350 meters. Toyo constructions, was the Japanese company awarded the four year contract on the project which was commissioned last year.
The site has been dredged to depths of -15 meters for the main quay length of 670 meters, -12metres for quay length of 230 meters, -11 meters for quay length of 210 meters and -4.5 meters for quay length of 83 meters.
The first phase involves construction of initial three berths scheduled for completion in 2016.The new berths will have an additional capacity of 450,000 TEUs, with two further expansion phases running through to 2020.
