Western Kenya is set to benefit from a Sh128 billion ($1.5 billion) power and irrigation project .The Nile Equitorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Programme (NELSAP) plans to supply 32 megawatts (MW) of power in Gucha and put 55,000 hectares of land under irrigation. It will also supply 90MW of power in Yala and put 12, 000 hectares of land under irrigation.
“Over 10,000 people in Western Kenya will directly benefit from the project,” said the director of water resources John Nyaoro in Kisumu.
The project funded by AfDB, EU, Norway, KfW of Germany and Netherlands is one of two investment programs under the Nile Basin Initiative. The other is the Eastern Nile Subsidiary Action Program. NELSAP promotes investments in power development and trade, water resources management, management of lakes, fisheries and watersheds and agricultural trade and productivity in its member countries, which include Kenya, Burundi, DRC, Egypt, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
