CALL FOR TRAINING OF ENGINEERS ON STRUCTURAL EUROCODES

The construction sector in Kenya has encountered a multitude of challenges, with one notable issue being the recent increasing number of structural collapses both during and after construction. One of the root causes of this problem that has been identified is the continued use of withdrawn or obsolete construction standards that no longer align with the current construction landscape in the country. 

The incorporation of Eurocodes in Kenya and their subsequent adoption in the Proposed Building Code 2020 represents a significant shift in the design principles in Kenya. This move aims to introduce new design norms that are more attuned to the present construction environment, taking into account the materials and geotechnical aspects of construction. 

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) through its mandate is playing a pivotal role in this transformation by actively training engineers in Eurocodes across the country to build local capacity and this is well acknowledged by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) through issuance of Continuous professional development (CPD) points. 

The primary objective of this training initiative is to equip engineers with the essential skills required in undertaking safe structural designs and implementing best construction practices during supervision of construction projects. 

Kenya Bureau of Standards plans to undertake four cycles of physical trainings per the schedule below; 

Physical Training – Venue: NAIVASHA – NYERI (Feb – June 2024)
