Following the nomination of Eng Joseph Njoroge as the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Kenya Power Board of Directors on Thursday (27th Jun) appointed Dr Ben Chumo, currently the Chief Manager, Human Resources and Administration, to act in the position of Managing Director & CEO of the Company, with effect from 1st July 2013. A process to competitively recruit a substantive MD and CEO by the Board, will commence shortly.

Dr Ben Chumo joined the Company in 1986 as a human resources officer, and rose through the ranks to become the Chief Manager responsible for human resources and administration in 2003. He has a wealth of knowledge in operations of the organisation, having previously been deployed in all regions of the Company. During his career in the Company, he has been involved in various internal projects that included corporate restructuring programmes in 1995 and again in 1999. In 2004, Dr Chumo championed the formulation and implementation of corporate performance management systems, making Kenya Power a pioneer amongst other state corporations in target setting.

In 2010/11, he was seconded by the Company to Manitoba Hydro International of Canada on a consultancy basis, to undertake a capacity building programme for Kabul Electricity Directorate, Afghanistan. He has wide experience in industrial relations, having interacted and negotiated with one of the largest trade unions in the country, Kenya Electrical Trades and Allied Workers Union (KETAWU). He also closely interacted with the Federation of Kenya Employers, which he often consulted for.
