On June 2025 the first IREDonline, held under the theme “Resilience and Stability in Power Systems with Very High Shares of Renewable Energy Sources,” brought together leading experts from around the world to explore how modern power systems can remain stable and reliable while transitioning toward high shares of renewable energy. Organized by DERlab e.V., the two-day online conference marked the beginning of a new series of digital events aimed at advancing global knowledge exchange in the field of distributed energy resources and smart grid integration.

Dr. Philipp Strauss, the Chairman of the Scientific Committee and Spokesperson for the organizer, DERlab e. V. in Kassel, emphasized the immense value of this global exchange, particularly in discussions aimed at preventing blackouts.

Speakers from North America, Europe, Asia and Australia contributed to a dynamic and interactive program that featured keynote presentations, panel discussions, technical sessions and a hands-on workshop. Core topics included system stability, demand-side flexibility, inverter-based grid control, energy storage integration and microgrid deployment.

Graeme Burt, IREDonline Scientific Committee member from the University of Strathclyde, underlined: “The openness of experts from across the globe in sharing areas of challenge, experience to date, and learnings in resilience and stability in power systems made IREDonline particularly worthwhile.”

The conference fostered meaningful dialogue among policy makers, technology providers, utilities and researchers, reaffirming the need for international cooperation and innovation in designing future-proof energy systems.

“The first IREDonline successfully brought together a vibrant international community of experts to exchange ideas on distributed energy solutions. It demonstrated the potential of a digital platform to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration around the future of resilient and sustainable power systems.” – stated Aleksandra Dordevic, IREDonline Scientitic Committee member, from TU Delft.

IREDonline is a new series of online conferences and special-topics workshops that builds upon the well-established IRED physical meetings held annually. This initiative seeks to foster collaboration and global knowledge sharing in the field of electrical power systems.
