Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has increased the space for departing passengers and are installing 4,100 extra seats at the passenger terminal, at a cost of Sh 72 million. The Authority has be reviewing the space occupied by duty free shops and propose to cancel some of the leases and to relocate others to provide an additional 1,000 square metres to improve passenger flow.
The present overcrowded areas results in departing and transit passengers sitting, and sometimes lying, in aisles.
JKIA is the busiest airport in East and Central Africa and is currently handling 5.5 million passengers annually, more than twice its designed flow. The number of passengers handled in 2009 was 4.0 million.
Minister Amos Kimunya said last year that the airport terminal was overstretched. KAA’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Domonic Ngigi, said installation of the passenger lounge seats and the increased circulation area would enhance passenger experience for domestic, regional and international passengers.
KAA said it is carrying out an expansion programme which would increase the airports capacity to handle continually at least nine million passengers.
