Kenya is on track to become only the fourth African country to join the prestigious Washington Accord, a global agreement that recognizes engineering degree programs accredited by its signatories.

“Joining the Accord will allow Kenyan engineers to have their qualifications recognized globally and enable them to practice in other countries,” said Eng. Margaret Orgai, CEO of the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) in an exclusive interview with the kenya engineer.

What Is the Washington Accord?

The Accord is an international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs. Membership enables mutual recognition of graduates’ qualifications — opening opportunities for employment and collaboration across borders.

Kenya’s Progress

  • Over 90% of local engineering programs have been accredited in the last three years.

  • A joint accreditation framework is being developed with the Commission for University Education.

  • Efforts are aligned with Kenya’s broader goal to boost continental competitiveness under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

If successful, Kenya joins South Africa, Nigeria, and Egypt as African signatories — a major step toward global mobility for its engineers.
