In a move to curb congestion at the port of Mombasa, Kenya Ports Authority has issued a notice to all importers, shipping lines and agents indicating that all Less Container Load (LCL)/House Pier containers will not be allowed in the port.

“All LCL/House Pier containers should be consigned to gazetted Container Freight Stations (CFS) outside the port”, says KPA’s MD, Gichiri Ndua in a statement.

The move which takes effect from 1st December this year will not allow LCD containers except transshipment containers.

Shipping lines, clearing agents and importers are requested to take necessary measures to ensure compliance from the set date.

Congestion at the port has been a major drawback to the East and Central Africa gateway leading to the port losing business to neighbouring ports. The government has however shown commitment to improving the port’s efficiency and measures have been taken.
