The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has issued a Public Review Draft of the proposed Kenya Standard DKS 2801-2:2025, titled “Masonry Units – Specification – Part 2: Aggregate Concrete Masonry Units (Lightweight Aggregates).”(Download it here – Specification for masonry units – lightweight aggregates ) This draft is now open for stakeholder comments(Comment format – Comments Template-DKS 2801-2) and KEBS has extended the deadline for submission by two weeks, with the new deadline set for 27th June 2025. (Also see – Appendix Y_Public Review for DKS 2801-2)
Stakeholders are invited to review the draft and submit their feedback, which will play a critical role in shaping the final version of the standard. All correspondence should be addressed to the Managing Director, Kenya Bureau of Standards, for the attention of Jefferson Gathara at gatharaj@kebs.org.
About the Draft Standard
This standard was prepared by the Concrete and Concrete Products Technical Committee, operating under the guidance of the Standards Projects Committee and following KEBS procedures. It is part of a broader effort to ensure quality and consistency in construction materials used in Kenya.
The draft is part of a two-part standard, structured as follows:
- Part 1: Clay Masonry Units
- Part 2: Aggregate Concrete Masonry Units (Lightweight Aggregates)
The current draft (Part 2) specifically focuses on the technical specifications and requirements for masonry units made using lightweight aggregates.
Why Stakeholder Participation Matters
KEBS develops standards through its Technical Committees (TCs), which are composed of diverse representatives from the public and private sectors, academia, consumer groups, and other key interest groups. The draft standards are circulated through the KEBS website and notifications to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to ensure transparency and broad participation.
Stakeholder feedback is essential to the process. Comments received during the public review are carefully evaluated and incorporated into the final version of the standard, ensuring it reflects both local industry needs and international best practices.
Reference to International Standards
During the development of DKS 2801-2:2025, the Technical Committee referenced EN 771-3, the European standard for aggregate concrete masonry units, which covers both dense and lightweight aggregates. This alignment helps ensure the Kenyan standard is consistent with internationally recognized specifications.
Keeping Standards Current
All Kenya Standards are subject to periodic review to align with evolving technologies, practices, and industry needs. Users and implementers are encouraged to always ensure they are using the most up-to-date versions of standards.
Submit Your Comments by 27th June 2025
