Prof. Maurice Kizito Wafula Mang’oli was born on 5 th September 1953 at Kimaeti village in Bungoma County to the late Mzee Sylvester Makhakara Mang’oli and the late Mama Rosina Nasimiyu Mang’oli.

He attended his primary school at Kimaeti Primary School, Bungoma and then proceeded to Sacred Heart High School, Mombasa for his O-Level studies where he sat for (KSCE). For his A-Level studies at Friends School Kamusinga, he obtained 3 Principles, 1 Subsidiary (3A’s). It is here that most of his classmates including Prof. Khalagai gave him the title “The Giant of Our Times”, because he was a man of  razor sharp intellect.

Prof Mang’oli then joined the University of Nairobi for Bachelor of Science (Electrical Engineering) where he graduated with a First Class Honours in Electrical Engineering, under the City Council Scholarship. He proceeded to pursue his Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Nairobi under the UNESCO Scholarship.

In 1988 He endeavored to pursue his Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University, U.S.A. After a successful completion of his studies in 1992, he came back to Kenya to apply his knowledge in the engineering field and raise his family.

He was an Associate Professor for the department of Electrical and Information Engineering at the College of Architecture & Engineering in the University of Nairobi. For over 35 years he loved working with the faculty and staff and especially enjoyed teaching his students and encouraging them to go after their dreams.

Prof Mang’oli’s first employment was at the City Council of Nairobi from 1974 to 1984 where he served in various positions as a Trainee, Assistant Engineer, Chief Assistant Engineer in Electrical and Traffic Signal Engineer.

He then joined the University of Nairobi in July 1984 at the Department of Electrical Engineering as a Lecturer and rose to the position of Senior Lecturer. Till the time of his calling home he was an Associate Professor in the College of Architecture & Engineering. He was also an Electrical Engineer at Mauzito Engineers.

Prof Mang’oli has held various administrative and academic responsibilities in his line of duty which include and are not limited to the following;

  • Director Institute of Research and Consultancy Unit in the School of Engineering, University of Nairobi,
  • Member of College Management Board, College of Architecture & Engineering, University of Nairobi,
  • Engineering Consultant.  
  • Member of Technical Evaluation team for analyzing tenders for the University of Nairobi,
  • Kenya Institute of Education (KIE),
  • Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC),
  • Former Electrical Commission (ECK),

and many others.

He was a member of a few committees that include; Member of Dispute Arbitration Panel for Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), Member of Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Transport, Advisor to the MPs on the Power Generation in Kenya, Member of Board of Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI),Chair, Board of Governors, Kibabii Diploma Teachers College, Bungoma.,World Bank Consultant on the Human Resource Capacity Challenges tied to Higher Education (Universities) expansion in Kenya and External Examiner: Makerere University, Moi University and JKUAT.
