A Sh10 million fish processing plant has been opened at the Coast. The plant, based at Mtwapa, is jointly owned by Diamond Sea Food Limited and the Danish Government. During a ceremony held on 3 February 2011 presided over by the Danish Minister for Development Corporation, Soren Pind, the owners of Diamond Sea Food Limited said the factory has a capacity to process 400 metric tonnes of fish monthly.
“The company has recruited 50 personnel on a full time basis and many others will benefit indirectly from jobs around services supporting the plant”, said Khizeer Ayub managing director of Diamond Sea Food Limited. Mr Ayub added that the successful commissioning of the fish processing plant was made possible through the support of Danida the development arm of the Danish Government. “We also want to say a big thank you to Mr Jorgen Lutken of Ekko Fisk and Mr Okulu of the Danish Embassy. Also, the Kenyan Government for speedily issuing licenses and invaluable technical advice, the MD said.
On his part Mr Pind , who was flanked by the Danish Ambassador to Kenya Mr Gert Andersen said the visit to the plant was to assess the impact of the Danish direct support to the private sector in Kenya. “We are here to see Danish technological transfer and Danish production methodology within the context of internationally acceptable good environmental business is provided to companies”, he said.
The Danish minister said the project was initiated through a partnership programme dubbed Business to Business.” He said the objective of the partnership is to establish processing and distribution of fish and frozen fish to domestic, regional and international markets.
