Geothermal Development Company (GDC) Tender: EOI, ASSESSMENT OF WATER REQUIREMENTS, CAPACITY OF EXISTING SYSTEM AND SOLUTIONS FOR WATER SUPPLY TO DEEP OPERATIONS IN GEOTHERMAL PROSPECTS, Closing Date 30/04/2013

REQUEST FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EOI) OF ASSESSMENT OF WATER REQUIREMENTS, CAPACITY OF EXISTING SYSTEM AND SOLUTIONS FOR WATER SUPPLY TO DEEP OPERATIONS IN GEOTHERMAL PROSPECTS

TENDER REF NO: GDCC/HQS/EOI/078/2012-2013

1. Introduction

Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is undertaking deep drilling at eh geothermal prospect sites, Currently GDC obtains all the water for the drilling operations requirements form ground water using boreholes drilled at the Menengai geothermal prospect site. GDC intends to increase the number of the drilling rigs to accelerate development of the geothermal resources at various fields located I the Kenya Rift Valley.

2. Objectives of the Assignment

i) Carry out a detailed assessment of water requirements for increased deep drilling operations at GDC’s geothermal sites.

ii) Inspect and make assessment of the existing water supply system at Menengai, its capacity and required upgrade / improvement.

iii) Provide proposal for solutions that can provide additional water to cope with up to 8 drilling rigs at Menengai project.

iv) Make detailed assessment of the ground water potential at the geothermal prospect sites

v) Identify the production aquifer and their quality

vi) Estimates the aquifer capacities

vii) Recommend the optimum extraction method and rates

3. Scope of work or services of the assignment (TOR)

I) Carry out a study to determine water demand for 8 deep drilling rigs and associated support operations

II) Inspect the existing water supply system and recommend appropriate modifications/upgrade and development to enhance its capacity.

III) Design an additional system that can provide adequate water to expanded drilling operations (to specify, source of water, pumping equipment, power supply, transmission and reticulation system, stooge and optimization)

IV) Carry out detailed geological and geophysical investigation and evaluation of ground water sources

V) Carry out detailed hydrological evaluation and existing water boreholes performance

VI) Carry out chemical analysis of the ground water to determine quality of the water

VII) Hydro geological report should contain the following:

a) Results of all assessments referred above (Part IV, V and VI)

b) Contour map at 2m interval of the bore field area

c) Cadastral map showing GDC pump site property boundaries

d) Spatial maps showing current borehole locations and sites of new / additional proposed boreholes

e) Appropriate new borehole design (depths, bore diameter, casing depths)

f) Maximum number of additional boreholes (including spacing)

g) Optimum extraction rates

h) Water quality report

4. Qualification requirements /evaluation criteria

The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) now invites eligible consultants to indicate their interest in providing this service. Firms / individuals must be able to provide professional consultancy in water and reticulation system, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Ground water and hydro-geology. Interested consultants must provide information indicating that they are qualified to carry out the task. Consultants may constitute joint – venture to enhance their chances of qualification. Interested consultants are required to submit applications in English language with the following specific information:-
