GDC is set to start drilling for geothermal steam in the Menengai Caldera, in Nakuru. This will pave way for power producers to come on board and put up power plants.

Two rigs that recently landed at the site are being assembled in readiness for the drilling exercise. Consequently, GDC intends to engage investors/partners who will get the opportunity to install the first four power plants with each expected to produce at least 100MW at the Menengai Prospect.

This way GDC will boost geothermal capacity in Kenya to 600MW by 2016, and 1,000MW by 2018.The estimated 400MW Menen¬gai Phase I Geothermal Project, in¬cluding construction of four power plants, is projected to be completed by 2014.

A total of 120 wells will be drilled for this phase. Plans are also under¬way to deploy four additional rigs to the project at a later stage. The arrival of the two rigs has marked a great milestone for GDC which started operations barely a year ago. GDC becomes the first company in the region to own two-state-of-the-art rigs. GDC will reduce the cost of drilling by over 45%.
