A Kenyan innovator has been selected for the short list on the brand new Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. Samuel Njugana Wangui from the University of Nairobi entered Chura, an online application which allows users to move airtime between different SIMs regardless of carrier, and was selected out of entries from 15 African countries.
It also allows them to buy airtime from service providers which can be used on any network, as well as allowing for airtime to be sent to family members or exchanged for cash.
There are 12 shortlisted entrants, all receiving six months mentoring from today following which three finalists will be chosen. From there, the finalists will have to present their now fully developed innovations with business cases, and the winner will receive £25,000.
