The Ksh 327 billion project that raised concern over the cost had its tender awarded to China Road and Bridge Corporation whose process of selection is also in question.
Plans to compensate landowners whose holdings will be affected are under way with the government estimating that it will need Ksh10 billion for the exercise.
The current railway line which starts at Mombasa moves 17,000 meters above sea level in Nairobi. The rising is steep thus constraining its performance and its ability to pull heavy loads at reasonable speeds. The new SGR line will however take a totally different route from the existing one in efforts to get maximum efficiency based on the gradient and curvature of the route.
The project, funded by China’s Exim Bank is expected to be commissioned by the year 2016.
