China Roads and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) will begin laying of the rail track lanes for the SGR project in November. This is after a six more specialized locomotives weighing 130 tonnes each and additional rails were shipped at the Mombasa port on October 28, 2015.The engines will be transported by road from the port were loaded onto trucks for onward transportation to SGR construction sites at Mtito Andei and Emali in Makueni county.
This is the second consignment of the locomotive engines with six more having arrived on September 20 from Beijing. The locomotive engines are to be used in transporting project equipment as well as conducting test runs. Earthworks for the SGR project are 70 per cent complete.
Track laying will start at two sections, one from Mtito Andei to Mombasa while the other one will start at Emali to Nairobi. The KES327bn project will include supply and installation of facilities such as water systems, electricity supply, signaling communication and ICT at 33, building and installation of traffic control, passenger stations at Mombasa and Nairobi among others. It is set for completion in 2017.
Recently, CRBC together with Kenya Railways entered into a partnership to expand the SGR line to Naivasha from Nairobi at a cost of KES157bn. Construction utility wagons have been delivered at section 7, located at Emali. They comprise of covered wagons, open top hopper cars, flat bed wagons and a locomotive engine as more are expected to arrive.
