Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is scheduled to have its annual technology exhibition and conference on November 3-4 at the institution’s pavilion grounds. The event seeks to bring together industry experts to network and engage on various opportunities where students can benefit from. The conference is themed ‘entrepreneurship’.

JKUAT Tech Expo seeks to encourage and support students’ innovative ideas so that they may tackle problems across all sectors effectively. It encourages innovation, collaboration and education.

According to JKUAT student chair, Sarah Wanjohi they have already received  submissions  in the categories of renewable energy, education, agriculture, water management, food security, financial inclusion, construction, waste management, transport, social and communication.

In 2015, the occasion was held in December and had over 100 project submissions from across the country with just 30 making to the exhibition.  A project on development for miraa beverages won as the most innovative project in that year. This year the attendance will be about 200.

“Currently we have shortlisted projects that will be presented during the expo though we are still calling on corporate sponsors to come onboard to make the two day event successful. On the second day of the conference, we hope to get a keynote speaker, panel discussions and mentorship experiences for students’ guidance,” adds Sarah.

During the first day of the conference, students will get a chance to pitch and showcase their presentations and projects to investors, interested partners, judges and to other students at JKUAT pavilion grounds

Some of the chief guests attending include: Eng. Bernard Ngore, Chairman, Kenya Motor Repairers (KEMRA) and Susan Mboya, Group Director, Eurasia, Africa Group (EAG) for Women’s Economic Empowerment at Coca-Cola and President of the Coca-Cola Africa Foundation. She will be the keynote speaker.
When asked what they intend to achieve from the tech expo, Ms Wanjohi says, “We are hoping that through the students’ mentorship session, students’ projects will now move from a start up and adopting stage to a business level.”
