The Principal Secretary for Industry, Dr. Juma Mukhwana was on Thursday the 15th of August a Guest during the live launch of the Kenya Skills Development Community of Practice (KSD-CoP) at Boma Hotel in Nairobi. Addressing the audience, Dr. Mukhwana underscored the need for the country’s technical and vocational institutions to produce graduates who meet contemporary needs and aspirations of Kenya’s Industrialization agenda. Also very important is producing skills that are relevant to industry which is constantly evolving and is not static.
He spoke on the importance of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), where those in industry with skills but have no academic papers can be certified to help them access formal employment opportunities.
Dr. Mukhwana pointed out that County Aggregation and Industrial Parks (CAIPs) were vital for local production besides being a dependable avenue for youth employment opportunities.
He lamented that Africa, despite having youth population advantage, had been left behind whereas the developed world had embraced the fourth industrial revolution.
The CoP will be anchored under TVETA.
The function was attended by representatives from State Department for Skills Development, State Department for TVET and, the International Labour Organization (ILO). The audience was composed of stakeholders from the Industry, Education and Labour Sectors.
