Fencing a plot is a major element in building. Aside from its aesthetic, it provides security to the inhabitants and deprives unscrupulous people from encroaching. Beyond that, fence walls creates privacy for your home.

Consequently, the thinking that fence walls are just one of those “Not too important” elements is flawed. If you’re doing it, then do it well. Make the wall an integral part of the overall plan.

A fence wall is supposed to complement your house. Don’t build the wall in isolation, as though it’s something you’ll demolish after building the main house. Construct good walls that’ll serve both today’s purpose and tomorrow’s.

It is very common to find an entire wall, stretching about 15meters (50ft), and 8course block damaged. Probably the artisan wanted to do all the masonry works before casting pillars so It was just wind that brought down the entire block. If you care to know how much is wasted in such a case, and required to put the wall back in shape, then do the maths.

The wall measures 50ft, which is 600inch, while a block measures 15inch. So you’ll need (600/15)*8 = 320 (roughly) blocks to complete that stretch only. If a block is sold for ksh23, then you’re spending around ksh 7,360 on blocks alone, exclusive of transportation.

You’ll buy at least 20bags of cement costing ksh 720 each, making ksh 14,400(approx). Cement and blocks approx. ksh 21,760.

Workmanship for both Master Mason and laborers will add up. Iron Rods, Stones, Water, Transportation are on standby.

So for that one side of 50ft alone, you’re looking at roughly ksh 45,000(estimated figure). So if you’re talking about a complete wall, you have a fair idea how much that’s going to cost you.

In fact, Let me add that most of the time, the number of blocks required to fence off a standard plot may be able to complete the shell of a standard 3 bedroom home or more depending on the design. A caveat to this is that there are other materials needed for the home which are not needed for the fence (windows, doors etc).

With these basic ideas in mind, will you rush to build a scanty wall? Why don’t you build it better enough to serve you forever? Always remember, if it must be done, it must be done well!
