EBK Endorses New Engineering Programmes, Advances Strategic Goals

The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has announced significant milestones following its 199th Ordinary Board Meeting held on 7th August 2025 and a Special Board Meeting on 21st August 2025, chaired by Eng. Erastus Mwongera. The sessions focused on advancing strategic, regulatory, and governance priorities aligned with EBK’s mandate.

Expanding Recognized Engineering Programmes

The Board approved new applications for engineering programmes from Chuka University and the Technical University of Mombasa, increasing the total number of recognized programmes to 75 out of 79 nationwide. This represents 96% of all engineering programmes in Kenya.

The move is aimed at enhancing access to quality engineering education and producing more graduates to meet workforce demands. EBK reaffirmed its commitment to achieving 100% recognition of all programmes by December 2025. The Board extended its appreciation to universities, the Commission for University Education (CUE), and the Heads of Public Service (HOPs) for supporting full accreditation efforts.

Aligning with Global Standards

Following Kenya’s provisional signatory status to the Washington Accord in June 2025, EBK is rolling out a roadmap to transition all local programmes to Outcome-Based Education (OBE) by December 2029. To date, three OBE programmes have been recognized in collaboration with universities and stakeholders.

In addition, EBK announced the rollout of a Gap Programme to enable B-Tech graduates to qualify for registration as Graduate Engineers by January 2026. A stakeholder workshop with Dedan Kimathi University, JKUAT, and Moi University is planned for September to finalize the new curriculum and implementation plan.

Strengthening the Pool of Registered Engineers

To sustain professionalization of the workforce, EBK approved the registration of:

• 34 Graduate Engineers from approved programmes

• 11 Consulting Engineers

• 87 Professional Engineers

The Board also registered 6 Temporary Professional Engineers and 1 Consulting Firm, bringing the total number of registered engineers closer to its goal of 10,000 PEs by 2028.

Promoting Compliance and Accountability

EBK highlighted progress on its compliance mandate, including:

• Issuance of 2,900 licenses to date

• Upgrading the Engineers Projects Registration Portal for integration with NCA, BORAQS, and County Government systems

• Drafting the Engineering Works and Services Monitoring Regulations 2025

The Board also released its exit report covering the six-year tenure of independent members. At the close of the financial year, EBK scored 2.4660 (Very Good) in its self-assessment, with strategy plan implementation exceeding 85%. The report has been submitted to the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Roads and Transport.

By accrediting new programmes, registering more engineers, and strengthening governance systems, EBK aims to foster a robust engineering ecosystem that supports Kenya’s national development goals.
