Barely  two weeks after World Bank announced their to support the construction of Kenya’s heavy fuel plant to help address frequent power outages ,China has also  pledged their commitment to developing more, the country’s geothermal energy.

Speaking in a meeting with the President H.E Uhuru Kenyatta,Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Lui Gaungyuan, the ambassador said that China was ready to share with Kenya its vast experience in infrastructure development.

With an installed capacity of 1,672MW, the country has according to a report by the World Bank managed to connect on 15 per cent of the citizens to the grid.It is however projected that the total generation capacity up to the year 2016 will be 2,371MW from 27 power plants planned to be commissioned in tandem with demand.

The 84MW heavy fuel Triumph Power Generation project in Kenya which received $102.5 million from the WB is on course and is due for completion in 2014.The power plant in Kitengela is owned by a consortium of investors namely Broad Holding, Southern Intertrade Ltd, Tecaflex Ltd, and Interpel Investments, making it the first locally-sponsored project to benefit from a World Bank PRG.

Other IPPs (Independent Power Producers) under development in the country are Thika Power Ltd (TPL), 87MW; Gulf Power Ltd (GPL), 80MW and the 36MW Ormat geothermal facility. The power projects are aimed at availing cheap power for the consumers as well as making it more reliable.

According to the Vision 2030, the country projects to have the demand increase with time as major projects come to completion. It is projected that projects such as light rail for Nairobi and the suburbs will require 16GWh, the second container terminal in Mombasa will drain the grid 13 GWh while Lamu port will require 16 GWh.
