Mastercard has marked a significant milestone in its commitment to Africa’s dynamic gaming sector by hosting its inaugural Africa Esports Summit in Casablanca, Morocco. This groundbreaking event underscores Mastercard’s dedication to fostering growth within the continent’s burgeoning digital economy and supporting the thriving gaming community.
A Market Poised for Growth
Africa’s young, tech-savvy population is fueling an unprecedented rise in the gaming sector. With over 60% of the population under the age of 25, the continent is primed for digital engagement. Current estimates place Africa’s gaming population at nearly 200 million, with 95% participating through mobile platforms. In 2022, Sub-Saharan Africa saw in-app purchases reach $778.6 million, and forecasts suggest that the industry’s consumer revenue will exceed $1 billion by 2024.
Mastercard’s Africa Esports Summit aligns with these impressive growth trends, emphasizing the company’s role in promoting innovation through technology and secure payment solutions. By supporting gaming infrastructure and nurturing partnerships, Mastercard is setting the stage for sustained industry expansion.
Empowering the Next Generation
“As gaming gains traction across the continent, Mastercard is proud to support Africa’s young, mobile-driven population by fostering an inclusive and innovative gaming ecosystem,” said Mohamed Benomar, Country General Manager of North West Africa at Mastercard. The summit is part of Mastercard’s broader strategy to support digital economies by creating secure, accessible payment solutions tailored to the needs of Gen Z gamers.
Strategic Partnerships and Industry Leaders
Mastercard has collaborated with prominent esports brands and hosted major events, including League of Legends and Valorant tournaments, aimed at propelling African gamers from grassroots levels to competitive platforms. The Casablanca summit attracted notable figures such as Hicham El Khlifi, President of the African Esports Confederation, and representatives from Riot Games, alongside Eniola Edun, founder of Nigerian gaming startup Gamr. Discussions highlighted the economic potential of esports, the role of policy in fostering growth, and the integration of mobile money solutions to enhance participation.
“This summit is a landmark moment for esports in Africa,” said El Khlifi. “By bringing together key players from finance, technology, and gaming, we are laying the groundwork for a thriving esports industry.”
A Vision for the Future
Mastercard’s Esports Summit has cemented the company’s leadership in the gaming sector, demonstrating a commitment that extends beyond technology to encompass mentorship, resources, and the advancement of financial inclusion. Kamini Redhi, Marketing & Communications VP for Africa at Mastercard, stated, “We ventured into gaming as a passion in 2018 and are now capitalizing on our expertise to connect African gamers more closely with the global gaming economy.”
Looking ahead, Mastercard will continue to leverage its innovative payment solutions and strategic partnerships to empower Africa’s gaming community, ensuring that the continent’s esports potential translates into lasting economic and social benefits.
