President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned two road projects on January 22, 2015 in order to ease traffic in Eastlands and around Nairobi.The two projects include the Outering Road and the Nairobi Eastern Missing Links Roads. The Outering Road involves creation of two-lane passages on each side of the road as well as a 9-metre Bus Rapid Transit corridor to be integrated at a later stage to cost KES 8.5 billion.
The Nairobi Eastern Missing link roads will cost Sh4.58 billion with the Government ejecting 32.65 percent while the European Union and the African Development Bank contributing the remaining 67.45 percent.
The road expansion is set to take about 3years to be completed and will cover Ruaraka, Embakasi, Makadara, Westlands, Kamukunji and Starehe constituencies.
The dual carriage ways will contribute 51% of the National Gross Domestic Product and improve security and transport system around Nairobi County.
During the construction, diversions of about 12km will be upgraded for use by the public and include Thika superhighway-Mathare North-Juja road, Mtarakwa-Komarock road, Embakasi Barracks-Kagundo road and Eastern bypass-Outering road.
