Neighboring Tanzania remains ahead of Kenya in the digital migration initiative having announced to have their second phase of the switch to digital broadcasting completed by 2014.The first phase has been completed in major cities.
While Kenya’s migration continues tied up in court tussles, Tanzania becomes the first country in the East African Community to adhere to the set deadlines for the initiative.
Tanzania’s switch involved the introduction of license of convention of communication services with other sectors such as banks and mobile money transfers. By December 2012, more than 250,000 TV sets in Dar es Salaam which has a population of about 4.5 million were connected to digital broadcasting through satellite and cable systems.
Kenya recently halted the 13th set deadline for the switch off of analogue signals moving it to 23rd December this year. This has been the case since early this year when the switch was scheduled for. The Communication Commissions of Kenya is however seeking to deny any further delays.
