The first section of the Lake Turkana Wind Power project comprising of 119 turbines (101MW) and the associated 33kV overhead line (OHL), a substation and Statcoms have been completed and connected at the site.  This is according to a report released by the company.

Vestas, a Dutch firm that was contracted in 2014 has completed the installation of all 365 turbines to and is currently connecting the remaining turbines to the substation. The 310MW will go through tests once the national grid is in place later this year.  The first batch will inject 90MW of wind power into the national grid by second quarter of 2017. This output from the wind farm will be enough to power more than 1 million Kenyan households.

The assembly of the turbines began in March 2016 after the civil works on the foundations of the first batch of turbines had been completed. The various parts, including the blades were transported by road to the site from the port of Mombasa. The turbine technology is of Danish origin but the production of the turbines, blades and towers was done in the Vestas manufacturing facilities in China.

The project targets to have an annual generation capacity of 1.6 billion kilowatts per hour (kWh) and have the tariff rate at 8.6 per kilowatt per hour as per the 20 year Power Purchase Agreement signed between the wind farm and the government.

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KeTRACO) has commenced laying of power transmission lines that will pass through South Horr, Baragoi, Maralal, Nyahururu, Gilgil, Naivasha and onwards to Suswa sub-station to the national grid through a double circuit of 400kV, 438km line.

Kenya relies heavily on renewables such as geothermal and hydro-power, aims to expand installed capacity to about 6,700 MW by 2017, up from 1,700 MW in 2013.
