The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), led by Registrar and CEO Eng. Margaret Ogai, participated in the 11th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and 9th African Engineering Conference hosted by the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) in Kampala, Uganda.
A key highlight of the event was the inaugural Registrars’ Forum, a side event supported by GIZ, which brought together high-level representation from across the continent. Among the attendees were the President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the WFEO Capacity Building Committee Chairman, the President of the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO), and registrars from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, and Tanzania.
The FAEO Registrars’ Committee, chaired by Eng. Ogai, was established to harmonize engineering regulation and professional standards across Africa. Central to the discussions was the development of an Africa Accord, which will serve as a framework to align professional standards and promote mutual recognition of engineering qualifications across the continent.
This year’s conference, themed “Engineering for Sustainable Development in Africa: Addressing Climate Change and Building Resilient Infrastructure”, underscored the crucial role of engineering in shaping Africa’s sustainable future. The opening session featured remarks by UIPE President Eng. Bosco Lepi, FAEO President Eng. Refilwe Buthelezi, WFEO President Eng. Mustafa Balarabe Shehu, and the Engineers Registration Board of Uganda.
EBK emphasized that the Registrars’ Forum marks a milestone in strengthening collaboration and capacity building within Africa’s engineering profession. “We are proud that our Registrar, Eng. Margaret Ogai, is at the forefront of this historic step to harmonize standards and elevate engineering practice across the continent,” EBK noted.
